EFFECTS OF THE SEAT-BELT LAW. REPORT FROM SAAB/SCANIA'S ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
BILBAELTESLAGENS EFFEKT. DELRAPPORT FRAAN SLAAB-SCANIAS OLYCKSUNDERSOEKNING
On January 1st, 1975 a law on compulsory wearing of safety belts by front seat car occupants was introduced in Sweden. A before and after-study of 262 severe accidents with SAAB 99 showed a remarkable decrease in moderate (36 per cent) and severe-critical injuries (46 per cent). A 20 per cent increase in slight injuries was noted, while the total reduction in injuries was 6 per cent. The belt usage increased from 48 to 93 per cent. There was a very good agreement between injury severity according to the AIS (abbreviated injury scale) system, the hospitalisation time and the duration of sick-leave. The AIS system is therefore recommended for more extensive use in accident studies and in official statistics. /TRRL/
