THE USE OF GEOPHYSICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY PART 1: SEISMIC TECHNIQUE
The article is a review of current methods of continuous reflection profiling and the refraction method. The basic underlying theory of each method is explained giving examples of recordings and their interpretation. Characteristics of sparkers, boomers, pingers and air guns used in effective profiling are tabulated and their individual merits are discussed. Examples of the application of each type are given. The performance characteristics of refraction profiling systems are tabulated and the conditions limiting their use are examined. Examples of their use are given. The interpretation of records requires skill and experience coupled with a good knowledge of geology and geophysics. Basic formulae used to determine the various useful parameters are quoted. Examples of the use of seismic techniques in site investigations are given, and future developments are indicated. /TRRL/
