DISTORTIONAL BENDING IN THE WEB OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS

Present design practice for dealing with distortional bending in the webs of prestressed concrete box beams is to superimpose a conventional design for transverse bending of the web upon the regime required for vertical shear and bending. This procedure has not been verified experimentally and this paper gives brief details of tests on four specimens specially designed to cover a wide range of practical cases. The results confirm that the proposed simple design procedure is satisfactory for medium and heavy shear and for a wide range of transverse bending moments. The limitations of the test programme are clearly defined and proposals are made for future research. (A) /TRRL/
