FORMWORK FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES. THIRD EDITION

The purpose of this book is to present the principles and techniques for the analysis and design of formwork for concrete structures. Since each structure is unique, the formwork must be designed and fabricated based on the specific requirements of each job. The level of effort required to produce a good formwork system is as important as the level of effort required to produce the right combination of steel and concrete for the structural system of the concrete structure. Formwork for concrete structures has a significant impact on the cost, time, and quality of the completed project. The book is organized in the following chapters: (1) Introduction; (2) Economy of Formwork; (3) Pressure of Concrete on Formwork; (4) Properties of Form Material; (5) Form Design; (6) Shores and Scaffolding; (7) Failures of Formwork; (8) Forms for Footings; (9) Forms for Walls; (10) Forms for Columns; (11) Forms for Beams and Floor Slabs; (12) Patented Forms for Concrete Floor Systems; (13) Forms for Thin-Shell Roof Slabs; (14) Forms for Architectural Concrete; (15) Slipforms; (16) Forms for Concrete Bridge Decks; (17) Flying Deck Forms; and (18) Top-Down Construction of Concrete Structures. Appendices are: (A) Dimensional Tolerances for Concrete Structures; (B) Guidelines for Safety Requirements for Shoring Concrete Formwork; (C) OSHA Regulations for Formwork and Shoring; (D) Conversion of Units of Measure between U.S. Customary System and Metric System; and (E) Directory of Organizations and Companies Related to Formwork for Concrete. An Index is provided. Since the last edition of this book (1976) there have been new developments in formwork for concrete structures, including materials and construction methods. This edition has been substantially revised to include coverage of these developments, new allowable stresses for lumber material, and new accessories that are currently available for forming concrete structures. Many patented systems and commercial accessories that have been developed are described and illustrated in this edition. Because of the modification in the allowable stresses of lumber, all calculations, information, and tables related to the use of lumber have been completely revised to conform with the existing allowable stresses. This edition also provides summary tables for equations that are commonly used for designing formwork. Many new examples have been added to illustrate the calculations for checking bending and shear stresses, and the deflection of components of formwork. A new chapter on top-down construction methods has been added.
