DELAYS CAUSED BY CARAVANS ON SINGLE-CARRIAGEWAY ROADS
The paper reports the results of a pilot study carried out by the department of civil engineering, university of nottingham, on behalf of the department of the environment. A caravan of average size was towed round a 1 600-km circuit representative of the general-purpose trunk road network of England by cars of low, medium and high engine capacity and delays to other vehicles were measured. The tests were carried out on weekdays outside the main summer holiday season. Delays under these conditions were found to be quite small-168, 74 and 48 vehicle-minutes per 1 000-km respectively.
