BICYCLE PLANNING IN SWEDEN

In Sweden over 30 per cent of all journeys are made by bicycle. Official guidance on planning for cyclists is contained in Scaft, the Swedish road design manual, published in 1968, and in two reports published later. Experience suggests that there are few places where cycles and pedestrians need to be physically segregated. The paths are usually more than 2.4 metres wide, with subways at major road crossings. Recent studies are concerned chiefly with signalised intersections. An overall plan for cycle routes in Stockholm is being implemented. A well developed cycle route network in Vaesteraas, 85 km long, is outlined. /TRRL/
