INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE ABERDEEN TUNNEL
The article gives a brief report on the geological and rock mechanics investigation carried out on the proposed Aberdeen road tunnel in Hong Kong. The tunnel will consist of two tubes each of horseshoe shape in cross section carrying two traffic lanes. It is anticipated that the "Australian tunnelling method" will be used for the excavation in approximately 80% massive granite, 11% in closely jointed volcanics, 3% weathered quartz monzonite and 6% weathered granite. From measurements taken at sections in a pilot tunnel the structural geology was determined in order to provide a histogram of joint spacings. Samples taken for petrological analysis were used to determine Young's modulus, compressive strength and weathering potential. A computer program is to be used in the design analysis using information on normal and shear stiffness so that in-situ stresses can be applied to the rock material. In this way the effects of blasting, rock bolting, shotcreting and tunnel lining interaction can be examined. /TRRL/
