HITACHI ZOSEN LNG SHIP RESEARCH
The 1,000.85 tdw experiment LNG-carrier "Snakyo Ethylene Maru" has a length oa of 65.22 m, a beam of 13.00 m, a draft of 4.10 m and is powered by a diesel engine developing 1300 bhp at 730/315 rpm giving a service speed of 11.30 knots. Cargo capacity is 412 cu m in the spherical tank and 694 cu m in the prismatic tank. The vessel was subjected to various experiments while at anchor and at sea as well as cool-down tests from early June through early August 1974. It was described to build the experimental vessel as a stepping stone to full size LNG carriers with a view to solving beforehand foreseeable problems which were likely to be encountered in the construction of practical purpose LNG tankers, with particular emphasis on: reconfirmation at a higher level of the safety of the two tank systems; investigation into problems concerning the shipbuilding system; determination of basic manhour needs at high accuracy; and checking of the overall flow of work in the shipyard.
