HOW A METALS EXPERT VIEWS THE NORTH SEA DILEMMA
In the North Sea the extremes of dynamic loads, low temperatures and severe corrosion have combined to test the properties of marine steels. In this article, a metals expert, who is in charge of the materials engineering and inspection division of an influential Norwegian approval organization, presents his views on how to reduce the costly failures of offshore structures in the hostile North Sea environment. Experience shows that costly fabrication failures due to such phenomena as hydrogen cracking and lamellar tearing can be prevented in some cases by using steel of improved quality. Any successful fabrication should be based on proper selection of the steel and the welding consumables as well as an effective and reliable combination of cutting, forming and welding processes.
