EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES: NHTSA LEADING THE WAY

As the national leader in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working to ensure that every citizen is served by an organized and coordinated system of timely, effective emergency medical care, regardless of whether the medical emergency occurs in the smallest town, rural community, or the largest urbanized city. This booklet is intended to educate and inform the non-EMS professional about current EMS systems, the future of EMS, and NHTSA's leadership role. It furnishes a definition of EMS, summarizes the history and highlights of EMS, describes traditional and evolving roles for system participants, including their relationships with others in EMS, lays out the broad tasks facing those who work in the field, and illustrates a concept for the future.
