PENA SETS ITS GOAL
At the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board held January 10, 1996, Secretary of Transportation Federico Pena announced the implementation of an intelligent transportation infrastructure. The infrastructure is planned for 75 metropolitan areas and will be implemented over the next 10 years. This brief article defines intelligent transportation infrastructure, outlines the steps in achieving the goal, and estimates the cost of intelligent components. A sidebar describes the Institute of Transportation Engineers' role in the standards development process.
