MAIN CABLE STRAND INSPECTION OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE

The George Washington Bridge is a 1450 m long steel suspension bridge that spans the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. Opened to service in 1931, the bridge is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bi-state agency that also owns all vehicular bridges and tunnels between the two states. The George Washington Bridge is the only 14 lane suspension bridge in the world. It has upper and lower level roadways that carry approximately 100 million vehicles per year. Ths article describes the Port Authority's in-depth inspection of the cable strand wires which has been carried out in order to determine the overall structural integrity of the bridge and to establish rehabilitation needs.
