SHEAR STRENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE: THE INFLUENCE OF SHEAR SPAN
This paper describes a series of tests on reinforced concrete beams, and develops an analytical model for calculating the shear strength of members with low shear spans. Three series of six beams were tested; within each series, the main variable was the shear span. All the specimens failed in shear with a diagonal crack forming in the central region. A simple mathematical model is formulated, which assumes that an inclined compression field resists the shear forces. The model is extended to members with shear reinforcement, and quantifies the influence of link spacing on the shear strength of members with links. Comparisons are made between measurements of the strength of each beam tested in the experiments and their values as calculated by the two models. The test results suggest that the new model and its extension perform better than other current models under the conditions of the tests. The new model borrows several ideas from the EC2 variable strut inclination method, but differs in the following important respects: (1) it determines the inclination of the compression field by the stiffness rather than the strength of the compression field; and (2) it directly incorporates the effects of the shear span and spacing of the links. Further work is being done to apply the model to beam-column joints.
