SAFE LANDINGS...
The article outlines the development of new design guidelines for high reliability concrete airport pavements; it summarises a paper given at a recent Britpave Seminar. Special reference is made to pavement requirements for Heathrow and Gatwick Airports near London, which are among the world's busiest airports, and have congested sites with minimal room for expansion. Pavement layouts have little or no redundancy, and the cost of closing runways for maintenance is high. Greater pavement loadings have resulted from increasing aircraft traffic and new wide-bodied aircraft, so that increased reliability and lower maintenance must be given priority. As a result, the British Airports Authority (BAA) has developed its new "Pavement Design Guide for Heavy Aircraft Loadings". This is based on the American linear elastic design program, JULEA, which has the necessary capabilities and accuracy for the design of both flexible and rigid airport pavements. JULEA (1) models pavements of up to ten layers; (2) considers multiwheel loading; (3) computes stresses, strains, and deflections in a rectangular coordinate system; and (4) has an option for computing principal stresses and strains. Design charts, for quick and easy use, have been produced for specific aircraft for both rigid and flexible pavements.
