TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING CAREER PATHS: TECHNICAL, MANAGEMENT OR BOTH

This paper discusses the author's definition of a professional transportation engineer and focuses on the needed balance between technical knowledge and practice, and management knowledge and practice. The author's premise is that the true professional is one who is aware that technical and management skills are both required in the practice of transportation engineering. No matter if the reader is generally serving in a technical capacity or mostly in a management function, this paper (and presentation) will help consider the range of skills the reader has, uses, and should continue to develop.
