DESIGNING THE RIGHT PROCESS FOR INVOLVING THE PUBLIC

The general public is becoming more active in public project planning and implementation. With an increased demand for government accountability, public involvement on projects is critical to the success of any project. Although transportation professionals are acutely aware of the need to involve the public in project planning, too often it is done without a thorough understanding of process dynamics or even of the specific outcomes desired for the process. This paper offers a few important guidelines for developing a productive and effective public process to enhance, rather than detract from, the planning effort.
