TRANSPORT AND THE ECONOMY

An efficient and effective transport system is essential for industrial development and sustained economic growth. The article outlines the background and scope of the statistics on transport expenditure. Statistics are also given on how much and what types of transport are used. The extent of the transport infrastructure and the amount spent by various sections of society on transport can be gauged. The estimates of expenditure on road freight, which accounts for about 45 per cent of the estimated total are subject to a wide margin of error. There is a wide variation between the various sources of data on operating costs and estimates of profit margin vary considerably. Interpretation of users' expenditure data can be difficult and there is no figure with which it can be usefully compared. For the covering abstract see IRRD 875983.
