REPAIR AND STRENGTHENING OF MASONRY ARCH BRIDGES
The Transport Research Laboratory has a programme of work which is intended to quantify the benefits and limitations of various repair and strengthening methods used on masonry bridges. Many strengthening methods exist but none have ever been tested and compared. This paper describes load tests to failure on two models, an unstrengthened and a strengthened three ring brick arch. In both tests the failure has been as a result of ring separation. The load at failure of the strengthened model was 3.7 times that of the unstrengthened model. Serviceability tests showed a considerable decrease in deflections of the strengthened arch. However, with the strengthening method used appearance can be a problem, and headroom is restricted.
