A GUIDE TO THE PROPERTIES AND SELECTION OF CEMENTS CONFORMING TO BRITISH AND EUROPEAN STANDARDS

This publication covers cements containing varying proportions of Portland cement clinker. Guidance is given on the selection of cement types and strength classes in the context of a full concrete specification and specified reinforcement cover. Advice is given on the performance of these cements in concrete. Emphasis is placed on the selection of cements to provide concrete durability, using either the combination of BS 8110 with BS 5328, or BSI DD ENV 1992-1-1 combined with BSI DD ENV 206. In general, a specifier should use one or the other complete packages. Advice is given on the prevention of freeze/thaw damage, seawater resistance, sulphate and acid resistance, acid attack, abrasion resistance and ASR resistance. Specific advice is not given on costs, and no attempt is given on other major factors which can influence durability such as design and construction; high alumina and oil-well cement are not covered.
