EROSION CONTROL SYSTEM FOR PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION SITES
The installation of a gas pipeline in Fairfax County created a study to assess the feasibility of implementing on-site erosion control measures so that off site damages are described first. Baseline erosion rates and uncontrolled erosion rates from the disturbed sites are estimated. These estimates come within the range of the corresponding erosion rates of neighboring watersheds where field data was collected. Four study sites characterized by severe erosion were chosen for the investigation. In attempting to determine a workable level of erosion control, it was found that it is impractical to limit the erosion rate from the construction sites to their baseline rates. An alternate criterion was suggested, limiting the site erosion to 15 times the site baseline rate. A brief description of potential erosion control measures is given, and two of the sites are detailed. A reduction in the costs of erosion control measures can be achieved if the scheduled construction period is changed from the summer, which is the season for high rainfall and resulting erosion.
