YELLOW RIVER DIVERSION
This article describes the construction of one of the tunnels, required for the diversion of water from a new dam on the Yellow River at Wanjiazhai in Shianxi Province in China. The diversion is along a 300km long aqueduct system, nearly 200km of which will be in tunnel. A 40km long 6.1m diameter main tunnel is being constructed between the dam and a junction from which two 4.8m diameter branches will run. The Italian consortium CMC-SELI is driving 21km of the main tunnel, using a Robbins double-shield hardrock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM was launched from a 10m deep starter tunnel in loess, a sandy clay. TBM progress has often been difficult through abrasive dolomitic limestone, but easier through argillaceous limestone. Very abrasive strata of quartz sandstone could also be encountered. With 7.4km advance so far, the project is progressing well and on schedule, though with considerable wear on the TBM. Modifications to its cutterheads are being designed. 1.6m deep hexagonal precast concrete segments are being used for the tunnel lining.
