TECHNIQUES FOR MODELLING THE HYBRID III NECK

The release of Version 5.1 of MADYMO has allowed an unrivalled flexibility for modelling structures. Users now have the option of modelling with rigid multi-bodies, finit elements, flexible multi-bodies, and combinations of all these techniques. Many of the new features are particularly suitable for modelling dummy parts. The purpose of this paper is to assess the suitability of these models for modelling the Hybrid III neck. The results from this work will also be used to improve RMTI's models of the BIOSID side impact test dummy, by best utilising the features available in MADYMO. Currently, the flexible bodies in MADYMO are suitable only for bodies undergoing small strains. The limitations caused by this are discussed, and an explanation is given about work that is being done to incorporate large strain effects into the MADYMO flexible body formulation.
