REAR-END-COLLISION PREVENTION SYSTEM USING IMAGE PROCESSING
The authors developed a rear-end collision prevention system that was implemented on the four-lane, 73.3 km Meihan Highway in Japan. Rear-end collisions on this road were 2.3 times higher than the average as a result of steep slopes, hairpin curves, and heavy traffic volume. The system uses the Directional Temporal Plane Transformation (DTT) method, which processes images from television cameras, detects moving loci of vehicles, and reliably measures traffic conditions, such as traffic flow, traffic congestion, and stopped vehicles. The system detects the possibility of rear-end collision in unusual situations and sends a warning signal to drivers using illuminated display boards. The results of system application at a hairpin curve with a high frequency of congestion resulted in a 45 percent decrease in the number of accidents compared with the previous year. This system is expected to be useful in monitoring traffic over a wide area and in the overall highway information system.
