CHARACTERISTICS AND SERVICE REQUIREMENTS OF PEDESTRIANS AND PEDESTRIAN FACILITIES

An attempt is made to collect and consolidate known characteristics concerning both pedestrians and their facilities, and those parameters termed service requirements or design criteria. A table is used to summarize pedestrian facility development considerations divided among the three major elements of pedestrian systems. The factors which affect walking speeds on level pathways and grades are discussed, as well as the various factors which affect movement on stairs. A discussion of speed-density relationships compares level walks and stairs in relating the size of the pedestrian module to walking speed. Factors which affect sidewalks (volume, effective width), arrival processes and queueing, signalized crossings, mechanical stairs, walks and ramps are also covered. Levels of service standards are outlined, and the design of sidewalks, passageways and ramps are described. The design of stairs, motor stairs and moving walks, turnstiles and revolving doores are also considered.
