AIRFLOW PHENOMENA AT HOVERSKIRT EDGES
The paper describes rig experiments mainly conducted on full-size segmented skirting of 9 in. pitch (belonging to HD2). The air flow is shown to attach itself to the skirt surface, giving rise to upward "jetting". A modification of the edge profile is shown which greatly reduces the upward effect, slightly reduces the air consumption and sweeps the flow to the rear. Arguments are adduced to the effect that this should reduce the spray nuisance and power consumption with possible improvements in speeds, ride comfort and skirt life.
