PERFORMANCE OF AZIMUTHING THRUSTERS
In the first section momentum theory is used to demonstrate that in order to absorb the large installed powers needed for this type of application, a nozzle propeller offers a more attractive solution than an open propeller. It is further shown that the realizable gains in efficiency from a nozzle propeller depend completely upon the thrust produced by the nozzle and its induced velocity at the propeller plane. A theoretical model is described that accurately accounts for the interaction between the propeller and its surrounding nozzle. Vortex theory is used for the nozzle and lifting line, with surface corrections, for the propeller. Computer predictions are shown to be good and comparison with published open water curves and special model tests at bollard condition are presented to illustrate the wide range of application of this theory.
