EUROPEAN RESEARCH INITIATIVES

This paper describes the organisation of transport research in Europe and outlines some of the areas of interest. Details are given of the organisations which sponsor research, policy objectives, research establishments and European Community Framework Programmes. The DRIVE and PROMETHEUS programmes are considered in more detail. Aspects with which they are particularly concerned include managing travel demand, improving travel information to drivers, improving vehicles in terms of engine efficiency and emissions reduction and the reduction of congestion.
