RADICAL SOLUTIONS: 'CAR-FREE' CITIES
This paper considers the concept of car-free cities and assesses the success of some schemes that have been implemented. Details are given of schemes in operation in Amsterdam, Bologna, Lubeck, Bremen and Berlin. Issues raised by car-free experiments are discussed. It is suggeseted that attitudes to car ownership may be changing with a significant section of the population prepared to give up their cars. There is a need however for good quality alternatives. Suggestions are made for the types of measures necessary. For the covering abstract see IRRD 874870.
