CITY OF LONDON - TRAFFIC AND ENVIRONMENT SCHEME

Traffic conditions in the City of London 'square mile' before the implementation of the traffic restraint scheme are described. Plans to improve conditions were subject to a large number of constraints but were speeded up by the incidence of the terrorist bomb. The scheme involved a) 8 access points, b) 18 egress points, c) closure of 20 minor streets and d) the retiming of traffic signals to facilitate traffic flow around the core area.
