CURRENT MATERIALS FOR APPLICATION TO HIGH PERFORMANCE SHIPS
The purpose of this paper is to provide a synopsis of the "high performance" materials and the status of some of the current research in them. The majority of the structured materials used in these ships is aluminum, particularly the 5000 series (aluminum-magnesium alloys). The ease of working and low cost outweigh the disadvantages of welding and low tensile and fatigue strength. The machinery materials of primary interest are those used in the ship thrusters and in the hot sections of gas turbine engines. The material requirements for propellers are castability, high corrosion fatigue properties and good general corrosion resistance. Current research in the analysis of propeller/impeller materials and related experiences with highly stressed high-speed propellers are addressed. A summary of the research in gas turbine materials is included, where oxidation and high temperature corrosion resistance are required.
