WE CAN'T GO ON AS WE ARE - THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF TRENDS IN TRANSPORTATION

The author suggests that although a commitment to sustainable development is government policy there is little sign of any fundamental change in thinking where transport policy is concerned. The environmental impacts of transport, in particular the car, are outlined to demonstrate the need for a change. The social consequences of the car in the context of wider social change are described to indicate the car's role in the process of social fragmentation and inequality. The development of environmental movements and their potential to change society are discussed. It is suggested that to realise sustainable transport policies requires a) the realistic valuation of environmental resources, b) a commitment to achieving social equality and c) greater political participation.
