TECHNICAL NOTE: EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS ON WEATHERING STEEL AND GALVANIZED STEEL: A CHAMBER STUDY
A statistically designed laboratory study has been completed which utilized controlled environment exposure chambers to assess both direct and synergistic effects of air pollutants and other environmental factors in 6 different classes of materials. Economically important materials (including weathering steel, and galvanized steel) were exposed to controlled environments of clean air and polluted air. A 2-level factorial arrangement was selected as the experimental design. While the corrosion of weathering steel is normally a parabolic function of time, in the relatively short 100 hours exposure, the corrosion data was essentially linear with time. Based on analyses of variance of the experimental data, the important factors controlling corrosion were concentration of S02, relative humidity, and temperature. The interaction between S02 and relative humidity was significant at a lower confidence level. The other pollutants and their interactions did not cause significant effects. The corrosion of galvanized steel was essentially linear with time. An analysis of the variance of the polluted air data indicated that of 15 possible direct and interaction effects, only sulfur dioxide (S02) and relative humidity were important factors in accelerating corrosion of galvanized steel.
