AUT, AUTOMATIC UP-DATING OF TRANSYT TIMEPLANS, STAGE 1

AUT, AUTOMATISK UPPDATERING AV TRANSYT-TIDPLANER, ETAPP 1

Coordination of traffic signals is complex and difficult. There is a need for knowledge of proper traffic flows, of different traffic structures, of composition of vehicle types, pedestrians, different phase/stage orders and the effects of all these matters. Besides there is a continuous variation of traffic flows, of new or changing areas for business and residence. The aims of the project presented were as follows: (1) to avoid ageing of the settings; (2) to optimise the settings for optional effects; and (3) to change the settings automatically. There is a lot of software to model the traffic behaviour. The Swedish concept employs one of the most widely used software programs in the world, the TRANSYT-program, version 8-9. The program has been enhanced with a lot of routines to make it more user friendly, to help the traffic engineer to put more accurate figures into the program and to make it possible to optimise the settings for optional effects, such as the least fuel consumption, exhaust emissions or vehicle operation or journey costs. The concept uses a model called TRAF to estimate the total flow- and traffic picture via some of the ordinary detectors. The model also predicts a complete flow picture suitable as input for TRANSYT. So far there is no complete evaluated effect of the benefits using AUT ("Automatic up-dating of TRANSYT timeplans"). On the other hand there are calculated and measured effects for parts of the AUT-model, for example: (1) improved traffic flow input-data by using TRAF; and (2) automatic changes of the settings.
