BASALT CRUSHER FINES AS A REPLACEMENT FOR SAND IN CONCRETE
Sand supplies for the production of concrete in inland areas are beginning to peter out, making them more difficult and expensive to obtain as they have to be won further from the main population centres. Also, the environmental consequences of repeatedly removing the sand from river banks must be considered. This paper describes a laboratory program which investigated the effects of complete and partial replacement of sand in concrete with basalt crusher fines, a product freely available from quarries in the Toowoomba area, where the program was initiated. The results indicate that total sand replacement is not feasible but partial replacement may be, despite the clay content of the basalt fines, which is known to be deleterious to concrete. (a)
