MACHINERY SPACE FIRE DETECTING TESTS. PHASE 1
A series of small scale ship fire tests were undertaken. These tests were intended to measure the response time of various types of fire detecting devices, at various locations in the machinery space of the test ship RHODE ISLAND. Seventy-three individual devices, of nine different types were installed. The fire locations and ventilation conditions were varied to indicate differences in response time due to these factors. The tests demonstrate the importance of environmental conditions on placement of various types of detection devices and indicate, from a detection capability standpoint only, that several types of devices may give satisfactory indication of a small machinery space fire. Some information on detector placement is developed.
