AN ADVANCED INTEGRATED TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM. NEW YORK CITY'S EXPERIENCE
The City of New York has taken a giant step toward future ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management Systems) by providing a solid foundation of global networking capabilities at central TMC. The integrated nature of IVHS operations will be built on the City's experience with the open system with standard network protocols. A complex network of transportation services ranging from surface traffic management to intermodal public transit system (the largest and most complex) will be built on such an approach. The integrated large size traffic management system detailed here brings small system performance in a heterogeneous open architecture network -- a step which ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) demands.
