WILL TECHNOLOGY UNBLOCK CHECK-IN CONGESTION?

This article looks at the possible applications for automated systems to help speed check-in procedures at airports. The machine readable ticket, known as ATB2, is the most likely to become widespread yet still gives the psychological reassurance of a piece of paper. British Airways has plans for up to half the check-in operations at Heathrow's Terminal 1 to be handled by ATB2 by Spring 1996. It is installing some 50 ticket-issuing machines a week in travel agencies throughout the UK. ATB2 will not end the need to check the passenger in, but it will reduce the time the process takes.
