SENIOR EXECUTIVES' PERSPECTIVES ON STRATEGIC TRUCKLOAD CARRIER INITIATIVES

U.S. truckload (TL) motor carriers operate in an industry characterized by fierce competition and constant change. Motor carriers without a solid strategy for maintaining long-term competitiveness have no guarantee that they will be in business tomorrow. This paper presents the results of a survey of TL executives that identifies comprehensive strategic issues that their firms considered important. Seven comprehensive strategies to achieve competitiveness were represented, although differing degrees of importance were placed on each strategy with regard to its effectiveness. The results have strong implications for TL firms seeking the appropriate strategic balance to compete.
