COMPATIBILITY OF AUTOMATED HIGHWAY SYSTEMS (AHS) AND FREEWAY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (FMS)
The Department of Transportation established an Automated Highway System (AHS) Program within the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and began efforts toward developing the design of a prototype system. The overall program has been structured into three phases, the first of which is currently underway and is entitled the Precursor Systems Analyses. The second phase will be the AHS Systems Definition which will be a multi-year effort. In this phase, the prototype system will be defined, built, and tested. The third and final phase of the program will perform an operational evaluation of one or more implementations of the AHS system. This paper presents a discussion of one aspect of Task K which is the Roadway Operational Analysis. The issues addressed in this task concern the daily operation of an AHS system including the functions that the system will perform, control center activities, incident management, and staffing.
