SMART HIGHWAYS DESIGNED TO SAVE LIVES
San Antonio's smart highway system, TransGuide, is the most advanced freeway communication system in the nation. TransGuide's communications network consists of six parts: traffic loop detectors, fiber-optic cables, high-speed computers, high-resolution video cameras, changeable message signs, and software programs. The TransGuide Control Center, modeled after the NASA Space Center, is the heart of the system, with all road information coming into and leaving this central location. This article explains the impetus for developing TransGuide, describes the components that comprise the system, and provides information on the backup systems that guarantee TransGuide's reliability. A sidebar highlights other smart highways across Texas.
