ITS OPERATIONAL TESTS

Operational tests help intelligent transportation systems (ITS) make the transition from research and development to full scale deployment. Operational tests are conducted as cooperative agreements between the public and private sectors, with the participants sharing in technical, administrative, and financial responsibilities. Through the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), a program of open solicitations was initiated to ensure the opportunity for all interested parties to participate in operational tests. To date, the United States Department of Transportation is participating as a partner in 70 operational tests. This article highlights operational tests that focus on navigation and route guidance, motor carrier uses of ITS, transit communications, ride-sharing projects, and advanced traffic management.
