PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE--A CONTRACTOR'S SAFETY PROGRAM
Many elements are necessary for an effective safety program--a management statement, designation of safety responsibilities, disciplinary policy, recognition of superior safety efforts, communication, hazard analysis, correction of unsafe conditions, correction verification, accident and illness reporting, accident investigation, and recordkeeping. Designing a comprehensive safety program is only half the equation; full implementation of the program is the other half. This article focuses on the implementation of safety programs to achieve regulatory compliance and safe work sites. The author emphasizes implementation of the program at all levels. Supervisors must be trained, and retrained as necessary, to appropriately emphasize the risks involved and the importance of the safety program. Documentation is essential also for assessing job hazards and recording mishaps to help prevent future accidents. Finally, program review at periodic intervals is crucial to ensure effectiveness of the safety program. The article concludes with a "How To Get Help" section.
