FLORIDA'S RAILROAD REVERIE
The idea of building a high-speed passenger rail line in the United States keeps coming back, even though every previous effort has died in a nightmare of unfavorable finances and unexpected political problems. The article discusses Florida's plan to subsidize high-speed rail that would connect Miami, Tampa, and Orlando at an estimated cost of $70 million a year for 30 years. The state's tourist trade, rapid population growth and inability to build new highways makes Florida an appealing locale for state-subsidized high-speed rail.
