ANALYSIS OF DIESEL EMISSIONS DUE TO AUTOMOBILES AT SELECTED JUNCTIONS IN THE CITY OF VISAKHAPATNAM - A STATISTICAL APPROACH
This paper presents the results of a statistical analysis of data about diesel vehicle exhaust emissions, mileage, and vehicle age at two major road junctions in the city of Visakhapatnam, India. The data were analysed to: (1) observe the existing trend of exhaust emissions from heavy and medium diesel vehicles; and (2) develop a model correlating the effects of vehicle age and mileage. The smoke density of the emissions was measured, using the free acceleration method with the Hartridge Smoke Meter. Diesel vehicles of different types were stopped, their emissions were measured, and their drivers were interviewed. The statistical analysis included: (1) a correlation technique to estimate the relation between the variables; (2) a linear regression analysis to estimate the effect of the variables; and (3) a chi-square test to compare observed and expected results. Some of the results are tabulated. For all the vehicles, a positive correlation was found between vehicle age and emission value, and a negative correlation between vehicle age and mileage. 85% of the vehicles, passing through the junctions, were found to exceed their speed limit, so that they increased pollution.
