DETERMINATION OF HORIZONTAL FORCES ON BRIDGE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS TRANSMITTED THROUGH FIXED AND FREE BEARINGS
This paper considers the assessment of horizontal forces on bridge piers and abutments, in relation to the Indian IRC Bridge Code. In particular, it discusses the specification of the magnitude of the horizontal forces at fixed and free bearings, given in Clause 214.5.1 of Section II of the Code. The paper aims to: (1) show the effect of temperature and applied horizontal force on the resultant horizontal force; (2) clear up some doubts about conflicts between the present Bridge Code and its predecessor; and (3) recommend the values of the resultant horizontal forces on the bridge piers, supporting two adjacent simply supported spans, which are not given in the present Code. Calculations are made for bridge deck expansion and contraction for: (1) a simply supported single span; (2) many spans simply supported on piers with one free and one fixed bearing; and (3) many spans simply supported on piers with two fixed bearings. The results will help bridge designers to obtain accurate and realistic values of the horizontal forces on bridge piers, for various situations including those where the Bridge Code provides no guidelines.
