TRANSPORTATION FUNCTIONS; A FIRST ATTEMPT AT A BETTER THEORY OF THE MEASUREMENT OF EFFICIENCY IN THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR

TRANSPORTFUNKSJONER; ET FOERSTE FORSOEK PAA TEORIAVKLARING OM EFFEKTIVITETSMAALING I TRANSPORTSEKTOREN

DEA (data envelopment analysis) is a suitable method of effiency analyses when we have many units that can be assumed to have the same production function. Production functions in freight transport will be named transportation functions when they take account of the geographical dimension of transport and the distinctive qualities of the goods transported. It turns out that in simple cases, the transportation function can be given an explicit mathematical form. DEA can be used to estimate transportation functions both in the simple and more complicated cases. In the latter cases though, it is often impossible to find enough production units to compare. Therefore there is a place for different methods of efficiency analyses in the transportation sector, including technical studies of concrete cases, operations research methods and comparative studies like DEA.(A)
