MOTIVATION AND TRAFFIC SAFETY AMONG PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS; EVALUATION OF ACCIDENT PREVENTION AT THE OSLO POSTAL TERMINAL

MOTIVASJON OG TRAFIKKSIKKERHET BLANT YRKESSJAAFOERER; UTPROEVING AV SKADEFOREBYGGENDE TILTAK VED OSLO POSTTERMINAL

Motivational measures to increase traffic safety among 400 professional drivers were implemented in two different departments of the Norwegian Post Transport Center in Oslo. The activities included a) a collective reward contingent upon accident reduction, b) bulletin boards with monthly accident statistics and c) group discussions. The drivers filled in a questionnaire before and after the intervention period. Accident rate (per million vehicle kilometre) was analysed for the intervention period as well as for a base line period. The change in accident risk for the two departments was compared to control data from four districts with no intervention. The answers to the questionnaire indicated that a majority of the drivers thought the implemented activities had improved their own traffic safety and /or that of their collegues.(A)
