RADAR FOR INVESTIGATIONS INTO ROADS: NON-DESTRUCTIVE RESEARCH INTO THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE OF ROADS BY MEANS OF RADAR

RADAR VOOR ONDERZOEK AAN WEGEN: NIET-DESTRUCTIEF ONDERZOEK NAAR DE CONSTRUCTIE-OPBOUW VAN WEGEN DOOR MIDDEL VAN RADAR

This article describes an apparatus that is used for investigating the layer configuration of pavements. Using a radar with a special scanner, mounted on a measuring vehicle, an electromagnetic wave is sent pulsewise into the pavement structure. With every discontinuity in the dielectric constant of the materials, partial reflection of the electromagnetic wave occurs. The reflected wave is received by the scanner and transformed into an electric signal. This signal is unravelled into waves differing in phase and amplitude. In this way a quantitative and a qualitative description of the pavement structure is obtained. The depth range of the radar system is discussed. This mainly depends on the energy loss in the materials and the dielectric differences on the layer interface. The measuring speed and the measuring density are discussed. Some applications of the radar system are: (a) airfield pavements; (b) wearing courses in engineering structures; and (c) detecting the reinforcement in concrete pavements.
