TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AS PART OF AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO URBAN EXPANSION

This paper examines three case studies of recent projects undertaken by the authors' firm in the Greater Toronto Area. Each illustrates different aspects of the advantages of integrating the planning disciplines throughout the process as well as some of the barriers encountered along the way. The Vaughan Transportation Study illustrates an Official Plan planning process undertaken with complete integration of the disciplines involved as well as the ratepayers, residents and landowners, and resulting in a consensus plan supported by all involved. The Markham Centre Study describes an innovative 'charrette' planning process, an intensive series of workshops designed to solicit input from all areas of interest and to develop a secondary plan with all groups simultaneously. The Montgomery Village Community plan is an example of a subdivision planning process which included the development of alternative standards for roadways, laneways, municipal services and housing components; standards which were developed through close consultation between the disciplines involved, the client and Town staff.
