MARITIME POLICY: CLEAR OBJECTIVES ESSENTIAL
The importance of the sea has constantly increased following political upheaval, technical advances in the transport industry and the interlinking of trade and industry. For a coastal state, a competitive maritime industry is of strategic importance. Military security for coastal states is especially dependent on the control of adjoining sea areas, possession of bases and the capability to protect shipping lanes. Using these basic principles, the author defines the maritime interests of Germany under the aspects of the economy, sea transport, maritime industry, marine law and the navy.
